Robert Smithson (January 2, 1938–July 20, 1973) was born in Passaic, New Jersey. 

  -Studied painting and drawing in New York City at the Art Students League of New York. 

  -His art and writings have had a profound impact on sculpture and art theory for over thirty years.

Simparch

Simparch is a group of American artists based out of New Mexico. The group is maintained and organized by two prominent members, Matthew Lynch and Steve Badgett. Simparch creates large scale, usually interactive installations/works that examine simple architecture, building practices, and recyclable material. Simparch often works in collaberation with other artists including several musicians, filmmakers, graffiti artists, and skateboarders. Most of Simparch's works experiment with design and materials and encourage interaction.

Michael Heizer

Michael Heizer is a contemporary artist who began his work in New York City, but soon left for the deserts of California and Nevada. Heizer's work is often created at such a large scale that it is unable to fit in any museum. Heizer began working on City in the early 1990's and has been an ongoing project ever since. Located in Nevada, it is one of the largest sculptures created at 1.25 miles long and .25 miles wide. City was inspired by ancient monuments and minimalism, and is being built using earth material, rocks, and concrete. City is scheduled to be completed sometime this year.

Ana Mendieta

Ana Mendieta was a Cuban-American artist most well known for her performance art, "earth-body" sculptures, photographic and video work. Mendieta earned her BA from the University of Iowa in 1969 and went on to get her MA in painting and MFA in intermedia. Her early work was considered strongly feminist, however, she later began focusing on a spiritual and physical connection with the land. Ana Mendieta died in 1985 after falling from the 34th floor of an apartment building.

Land art is a movement that emerged in U.S. in late 1960’s/early 1970’s. Land art was influenced primarily by cubism, minimalism, and conceptual art. Land art revolves around nature and the landscape, and is often placed in open areas away from civilization and left to erode under natural conditions over time. Land art is usually created in nature, using nature. It began using soil, rocks, organic media (logs, branches, leaves, water), eventually incorporating other materials like concrete, metal, and recycled items. Land art is a protest mainly against artificialness and commercialization of art, rejecting the museum/gallery-like setting.

Oscar Wilson founded his own studio out of London in 1996 titled "Studio Oscar." The images this Oscar and his studio create include hand crafted typography, also specializing in image creation. Working for clients such as Guinness, Honda, MTV, Nike and many others, with commissions from advertising, fashion, publishing, film, TV and any sort of visual communication.

2009 Grammy Posters

In honor of the 2009 Grammy's, the award winning agency of TBWA Chiat/Day released a series of posters advertising for the 2009 Grammy's. These posters displayed a variety of artists, such as Coldplay, Lenny Kravitz, Lil Wayne, Rihanna, Thom Yorke (of Radiohead), Stevie Wonder and Kanye West, who were asked to choose between 10 and 20 of their favorite artists and songs, that have also influenced them in any way. These song titles and artists were then embedded into a portrait of the respected artist and seen through magazine and TV ads for the Grammy's.

Ork Designs

Ork Design, located out of Chicago creates city posters where each town of the surrounding areas are placed in a cool, typographic style. Designing posters for big cities such as Chicago, Boston, LA, Brooklyn, New York City and several others, Ork also has started a line that deals with body parts such as the brain and the heart. At Ork Designs, their intention is to keep the designs original to each, individual city and environment while having fun along the way. Such posters have been included in a wide variety of magazines, advertisements, movies, and even in the collections of celebrities such as Jimmy Kimmel.
