You are all invited to come to the event or, better yet, come and play during the week--everyone is invited! Anyone who likes can come by and play, help, or just chitty chat. Please bring any unwanted packaging materials, tubes, boxes, cardboard, neat stuff!

We are hoping actual kids will come on Saturday. If you have or know some, please pass on the info.

I recommend this class for anyone interested in having a great digital portfolio. The teacher is also going to let students kind of make what they want out of the class, as well.

What this means is that if you aren't really interested in the portfolio and branding applications of using After Effects, augmented reality, and other programs and skills, you can still structure what you do and learn toward something you are more interested in--say, animation...

If you don't know the power of After Effects or how cool augmented reality is, do a Google or YouTube search.

Simparch is a group of American artists based out of New Mexico. The group is maintained and organized by two prominent members, Matthew Lynch and Steve Badgett. Simparch creates large scale, usually interactive installations/works that examine simple architecture, building practices, and recyclable material. Simparch often works in collaberation with other artists including several musicians, filmmakers, graffiti artists, and skateboarders. Most of Simparch's works experiment with design and materials and encourage interaction.

Michael Heizer is a contemporary artist who began his work in New York City, but soon left for the deserts of California and Nevada. Heizer's work is often created at such a large scale that it is unable to fit in any museum. Heizer began working on City in the early 1990's and has been an ongoing project ever since. Located in Nevada, it is one of the largest sculptures created at 1.25 miles long and .25 miles wide. City was inspired by ancient monuments and minimalism, and is being built using earth material, rocks, and concrete. City is scheduled to be completed sometime this year.

Ana Mendieta was a Cuban-American artist most well known for her performance art, "earth-body" sculptures, photographic and video work. Mendieta earned her BA from the University of Iowa in 1969 and went on to get her MA in painting and MFA in intermedia. Her early work was considered strongly feminist, however, she later began focusing on a spiritual and physical connection with the land. Ana Mendieta died in 1985 after falling from the 34th floor of an apartment building.

Land art is a movement that emerged in U.S. in late 1960’s/early 1970’s. Land art was influenced primarily by cubism, minimalism, and conceptual art. Land art revolves around nature and the landscape, and is often placed in open areas away from civilization and left to erode under natural conditions over time. Land art is usually created in nature, using nature. It began using soil, rocks, organic media (logs, branches, leaves, water), eventually incorporating other materials like concrete, metal, and recycled items. Land art is a protest mainly against artificialness and commercialization of art, rejecting the museum/gallery-like setting.

2009 Grammy Posters

In honor of the 2009 Grammy's, the award winning agency of TBWA Chiat/Day released a series of posters advertising for the 2009 Grammy's. These posters displayed a variety of artists, such as Coldplay, Lenny Kravitz, Lil Wayne, Rihanna, Thom Yorke (of Radiohead), Stevie Wonder and Kanye West, who were asked to choose between 10 and 20 of their favorite artists and songs, that have also influenced them in any way. These song titles and artists were then embedded into a portrait of the respected artist and seen through magazine and TV ads for the Grammy's.

Ork Designs

Ork Design, located out of Chicago creates city posters where each town of the surrounding areas are placed in a cool, typographic style. Designing posters for big cities such as Chicago, Boston, LA, Brooklyn, New York City and several others, Ork also has started a line that deals with body parts such as the brain and the heart. At Ork Designs, their intention is to keep the designs original to each, individual city and environment while having fun along the way. Such posters have been included in a wide variety of magazines, advertisements, movies, and even in the collections of celebrities such as Jimmy Kimmel.

Letterism:

An attempt the get poetry back into people's lives and on the 'hit parade.' In his attempt to rewrite all of human knowledge, Isou had discovered that the evolution of any art was characterized by two phases: 'amplic' and 'chiseling.' In following the development of the art of poetry for example, Isou saw the Lettrist at the end of a long chiseling phase which had begun with Baudelaire reducing narrative in his poetry to anecdote, then Rimbaud disregarding anecdote for lines and words, Mallarmé reducing words to sound and spaces (particularly in Un Coup de Des), and finally the Dadaists destroyed the word altogether. Isou saw at the end of this phase the new beginnings of an amplic stage for culture, from which a whole host of new arts, ways of working, and social institutions would eventually spring, with Isou at the center of all creative work.

The Lettrist worked on the level of the letter at the heart of what they believed to be an experiential language that was to be the basis of their new culture. Their Lexique Des Lettres Nouvelles, for example was a sonic alphabet of a 130 or so sounds from which a new natural language was to spring from and from which they composed their poetry. Isou along with his chief lieutenant, Maurice Lemaitre, worked out a notational style that resembled that of traditional, 'common-practice' music, sometimes even with staffs, bar lines, and dynamic markings. Lettrist poetry was also often performed by choral groups.

Letterism became the art that dominated posters, barricades, even clothing in the attempted revolution of 1968. The most immediately striking feature of Lettrism as a form of visual poetry is its extensive use of calligraphic techniques and the invention not only of fluid letter forms, but of new and ever changing letters themselves.

Isidor Isou (January 31, 1925 – July 28, 2007), born Ioan-Isidor Goldstein, was a Romanian-born French poet, film critic and visual artist. He was the founder of Lettrism in the late forties , an art and literary movement which owed inspiration to Dada and Surrealism. Letterism was a technique of poetic composition originated by Isidore Isou, characterized by strange or meaningless arrangements of letters.
In the 1960s Lettrist, Lettrist-influenced works and Isidore Isou gained a great deal of respect in France. The influential writer Guy Debord and the artist Gil J. Wolman worked with Isou for a while, before breaking away to form the Lettrist International, which latter merged with the International Movement for an Imaginist Bauhaus, and the London Psychogeographical Associationto form the Situationist International, a dissident revolutionary group. This is how Lettrist art influenced the posters, barricades, even clothing in the attempted revolutio
n of 1968. Although it seemed a highly self-contained art in the post-war period, in 1968 it suddenly became more deeply involved in active social change than such movements as Existentialism and Surrealism, and came closer to producing actual transformation than these movements.

André Breton (February 19, 1896 – September 28, 1966) was a French writer, poet, and surrealist theorist, and is best known as the principal founder of Surrealism. His writings include the Surrealist Manifesto of 1924.

In 1919 Breton founded the review Littérature with Louis Aragon and Philippe Soupault. He also associated with Dadaist Tristan Tzara. In 1924 he was instrumental to the founding of the Bureau of Surrealist Research.

In The Magnetic Fields (Les Champs Magnétiques), a collaboration with Soupault, he put the principle of automatic writing into practice. He published the Surrealist Manifesto during 1924, and was editor of La Révolution surréaliste from 1924. A group coalesced around him — Philippe Soupault, Louis Aragon, Paul Éluard, René Crevel, Michel Leiris, Benjamin Péret, Antonin Artaud, and Robert Desnos.
Anxious to combine the themes of personal transformation found in the works of Arthur Rimbaud with the politics of Karl Marx, Breton joined the French Communist Party in 1927, from which he was expelled in 1933. During this time, he survived mostly off the sale of paintings from his art gallery. Under Breton's direction, Surrealism became a European movement that influenced all domains of art, and called into question the origin of human understanding and human perceptions of things and events.
In the 1940’s The Vichy government banned his writings as "the very negation of the national revolution" and Breton escaped, with the help of the American Varian Fry and Harry Bingham, to the United States and the Caribbean in 1941. Breton learned to know Martinican writer Aimé Césaire, and later penned the introduction to the 1947 edition of Césaire's Cahier d'un retour au pays natal. During his exile in New York City he met Elisa, the Chilean woman who would become his third wife.

Apollinaire Wilhelm Albert Włodzimierz Apolinary Kostrowicki, known as Guillaume Apollinaire was a French poet, writer and art critic born in Italy to a Polish mother.

Among the foremost poets of the early 20th century, he is credited with coining the word "surrealism" and writing one of the earliest works described as surrealist, the play Les Mamelles de Tirésias (1917, used as the
basis for a 1947 opera). Two years after being wounded in World War I, he died at age 38, a victim of the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic.

Apollinaire's first collection of poetry was L'enchanteur pourrissant (1909), but Alcools (1913) established his reputation. The poems, influenced in part by the Symbolists, juxtapose the old and the new, combining traditional poetic forms with modern imagery. In 1913, Apollinaire published the essay Les Peintres cubistes on the cubist painters, a movement which he helped to define. He also coined the term orphism to describe a tendency towards absolute abstraction in the paintings of Robert Delaunay and others.

In 1907, Apollinaire wrote the well-known erotic novel, The Eleven Thousand Rods (Les Onze Mille Verges). Officially banned in France until 1970, various printings of it circulated widely for many years. Apollinaire never publicly acknowledged authorship of the novel.

Jenny Holzer (born 1950 in Gallipolis, Ohio) is an American conceptual artist. She attended Ohio University (in Athens, Ohio), Rhode Island School of Design, and the Independent Study Program at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Holzer was originally an abstract artist, focusing on painting and printmaking; after moving to New York City in 1977, she began working with text as art. The main focus of her work is the use of words and ideas in public space. Originally utilizing street posters, LED signs became her most visible medium, though her diverse practice incorporates a wide array of media including bronze plaques, painted signs, stone benches and footstools, stickers, T-shirts, condoms, paintings, photographs, sound, video, light projection and the Internet.

Jenny Holzer wrote texts herself for a long time between 1977 and 2001. However since 1993, she has been mainly working with texts written by others. Some of these are literary texts by great authors such as the Polish Nobel laureate Wislawa Szymborska, Henri Cole (USA), Elfriede Jelinek (Austria), Fadhil Al-Azawi (Iraq), Yehuda Amichai (Israel) and Mahmoud Darwish (Palestine).

She also uses texts from different contexts, such as passages from de-classified US Army documents from the war in Iraq. For example, a large LED work in the exhibition presents excerpts from the minutes of interrogations of American soldiers who had committed human rights violations and war crimes in Abu Ghraib. Here, what was once secret becomes public.

Holzer's works often speak of violence, oppression, sexuality, feminism, power, war and death. Her main concern is to enlighten, bringing to light something thought in silence and was meant to remain hidden.

This is a group of nameless artists based in Berlin and Paris under the name Neozoon. Their name makes reference to the common practice on introducing non-native animals into a new habitat only to refer to them as an invasion species when they thrive. Animals like: wild rabbits, muskrats, red fire ants, raccoons and grey squirrels.
They recently explained to Good Magazine, "At best, it raises questions, like: "Where have all those animals gone in my environment" or "oops-was this piece of shrink wrapped supermarket meat really once alive and kicking?" We take discarded fur coats and reintroduce them to the environment by returning them to their former shape, making it "live," to let people perceive [that] this used to be a living animal. Then it was just an animal skin, with a human inside, and now it has returned as an animal. Maybe it also adds something wild to our civilized urban surrounding."

Project 4 –Video

Make a short – under 5 minute – video piece.

You may create any type of video: ambient (no beginning or end), narrative, nonfiction, poetic, essay, animation, documentary, etc. In this project you may only use original sounds and music. THIS MEANS NO USING SONGS BY BANDS YOU LIKE!

The sound should be some combination of the following: diagetic (recorded in the room where the video is shot,) non-diagetic (recorded in environments different than where you shot the footage), recorded instruments, voice and song, voice-over, noise music, etc. In other words, I want you to record sounds yourself!

An important thematic/conceptual note: please no “drunkumentaries” (see me for definition) or day in the life videos of you and your friends—this is a tired theme, at best…

You may work collaboratively on this assignment (for example one person does the sound and one does the video or both of you work on both components) but both artists need to have a hand in creating the theme. No more than four students to a group, please.

In addition to the above, you must include a 200-250-word statement (12 pt. font double spaced) about the piece. If this were exhibited in a gallery, this would function as wall text. The written component should be a well thought out précis that covers the thoughts that inform you piece. Projects without text will not be accepted.

Option A: Installation art engages the viewer’s entire sensory experience in four-dimensional space. It dissolves the line between art and life (see Kaprow). It moves away from viewing art as discreet objects isolated from the environment in which they are encountered.

An installation artist uses almost any material/media to create an experience in a particular environment. Oftentimes, installation is highly site-specific. It is not confined to gallery spaces but can be material intervention in everyday public or private spaces. If you choose to install in a place other than the SA, you will need to make photos [including detail and wide shots] of the installation for your critique.

For this project you will be working individually or collaboratively to make an installation that fundamentally alters the viewers’ experience and perception of a space. To reserve the workspace attached to the classroom, consult with "Derek Andes" derek.m.andes@gmail.com, but please be mindful that others will need to use the space as well.

Option B: Performance art involves the artist and is created in real time...maybe. What makes performance art so intermedial in nature is that it is slippery and truly defies most boundaries and definitions that are imposed on it. On one end of the spectrum you can argue that a performance begins and ends in the place and time that the artist says it does. But if you are in a room waiting for a performance to start, isn't that really a part of the experience, hence part of the performance too? And approaching the place of the performance: part of the experience. Getting ready to go to the place of the performance: part of the experience. So on the other end of the spectrum, you could argue that we all are all involved in a lifelong performance, that every social act is in essence a performance, that there is no boundary between performance and life.

For this option you will create a performance art piece. Think of the performance as a way to direct and alter the experience of your audience in real-time. There is no limitation on how you choose to do this. Documentation of the performance should be included in your final portfolio.

Option C: Stage and document an intervention. Consider the way we viewed the work of Improv Everywhere—in a concise short video that captures the concept and documents the project. Please see me with questions.

In addition to the above, each artist must include a 200-250-word statement (12 pt. font, double spaced) about the piece. If this were exhibited in a gallery, this would function as wall text. The written component should be a well thought out précis that covers the thoughts that inform you piece. Projects without text will not be accepted.

As you receive this unintended message from the future, who do you believe? Is the world really a paradise of peace and prosperity, as the World President paints it? Or is it a distopian world filled with what will soon be billions of disillusioned souls? What do you make of the final transmission received?

The goal of this dramatic sound piece is to act as a catalyst for the listener to imagine the many dichotomies we face in life every day. It is to force us to question the obvious, the accepted, and the mundane. "What if?" is a question too often dismissed as pipe-dreaming. But things do change. Allan Kaprow

In the 1950s and 60s, Allan Kaprow was known for starting the “environment” and “happenings”. The Environment art was the beginning of what is now know as instillation art. Kaprow stated, “I just simply filled the whole gallery up … When you opened the door you found yourself in the midst of an entire Environment.” The Happenings are more the performance arts. The Happenings were planned performances that were an interaction between the performers and the audience. Even if the happenings concepts were the same the performance and the interaction with the audience would always be slightly different. A happening could never be duplicated exactly.

Krzysztof Wodiczko

Krzysztof Wodiczko was born in Warsaw in 1943 and currently lives in Boston. With a degree in industrial design, he is most well known for his large-scale outdoor projections. These works, which have been featured in more than a dozen countries, usually focus on social or political issues. One technique he has used to bring people’s personal experiences and the crimes they have suffered into the public sphere is to project these speakers’ hands or faces onto buildings. He has labeled this style of art in which private issues are made public Interrogative Design.

Michael Rakowitz

February 1998 in Cambridge Massachusetts, Rakowitz built the first parasite. The definition of a parasite is, “an organism that lives in or on another organism (its host) and benefits by deriving nutrients at the host's expense.” Rakowitz parasite does exactly that, it uses the ventilation of an existing building to inflate and provide temporary heated shelter for homeless people.

Felix Gonzalez-Torres

Felix Gonzalez-Torres is a Cuban born artist whose minimalist sculptures and installations often are seen as a reflection of his experience with AIDS and issues of death, identity, public vs. private, and the role of participation. Many of his projects encourage the viewer to take a piece of the work with them—candies for example. When asked who his public was, he answered Ross, his deceased lover, stating that “the rest of the people just come to the work.”
One of his works, Untitled (1991), a billboard of an unoccupied bed displayed in 24 locations throughout New York City, was made after his loss of Ross to AIDS.

Lucy Orta

Lucy Orta is a British artist who went to school for fashion design but is known as a visual artist that creates “architecture with soul.” Her earlier projects were Refuge Wear and Body Architecture. They consisted of tents turned into over coats and backpacks that became sleeping bags. Her work is a critical response to issues in society and the suggestions for alternative life styles.

The Billboard Liberation Front is a group of "culture jammers" devoted to "improving" billboards by changing key words to radically alter the message, often to an anti-corporate message. They published an instructional pamphlet titled "The Art & Science of Billboard Improvement." The idea of "Billboard Improvement" is also covered in Recipes for Disaster: An Anarchist Cookbook
The BLF came out of an event of San Francisco's Suicide Club. After the death of its founder Gary Warne, the remaining members of the group formed the San Francisco Cacophony Society, which went on to spawn a variety of culture jamming events (e.g. the BLF) and other groups (Burning Man, SantaCon, etc.).

The Barbie Liberation Organization or BLO, sponsored by RTMARK, are a group of artists and activists involved in Culture Jamming. They gained notoriety in 1993 by switching the voice boxes on talking G.I. Joes and Barbie dolls. They performed “surgery” on 300 dolls and then returned them to the shelves of stores, an action they refer to as “shopgiving.” This resulted in girls opening their new Teen Talk Barbie to hear it say phrases such as “vengeance is mine” and boys hearing their G.I. Joe say “the beach is the place for summer.”
The BLO was originally conceived in an effort to question and ultimately change the gender stereotypes American culture is known for after Mattell released a speaking Barbie that said “math class is tough and Lets go shopping!.” IBy 1993, criticism for Barbie as a negative gender stereotype for women was commonplace both in academia and popular culture. This may have been partially responsible for the generally positive response of the public to the project, the criticism they were making was familiar and not a controversial point to make during the 90s. Although their criticism was not new, the creative form of hacking used by the BLO was noteworthy.
Although most sources suggest around 300 toys were hacked, other reports up to 3000 across the country and in other countries like Canada, France and England. Others assert that only 12 toys were actually switched and the rest was cleverly arranged media hype by Vamos and his associates. This slant renders the project less about cultural stereotypes and more a critique of the nature of the television and media culture of the 90’s as well as opening a door for other media interventions in the coming years.

Are a group of culture jamming activists who practice what they call "identity correction" by pretending to be powerful people and spokespersons for prominent organizations. From their offices in Milwaukee, they create and maintain fake websites similar to ones they want to spoof, and then they accept invitations received on their websites to appear at conferences, symposia, and TV shows. They express the idea that corporations and governmental organizations often act in dehumanizing ways toward the public. Elaborate props are sometimes part of the ruse, as shown in their 2003 DVD release The Yes Men.
Their method is often satire: posing as corporate or government spokespeople, they often make shocking comments which they contend are an honest rendering of the organization's ideology which is usually hidden by spin, or extrapolate what they feel is the organization's ideology in a 'reductio ad absurdum' to come out with outrageous conclusions, such as that it should be possible to sell your vote or that the poor should eat recycled human waste. On most occasions no shock or anger is registered in the response to their prank, with no one realizing they are imposters. Sometimes, the Yes Men's phony spokesperson makes announcements that represent dream scenarios for the anti-globalization movement or opponents of corporate crime. The result is false news reports of the demise of the World Trade Organisation, or Dow Chemical paying compensation to the victims of the Bhopal disaster, which the Yes Men intend to provide publicity for problems concerning these organisations.
The Yes Men have posed as spokespeople for the WTO, McDonalds, Dow Chemical, and the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. The two leading members of The Yes Men are known by a number of aliases, most recently, and in film, Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno. Their real names are Jacque Servin and Igor Vamos, respectively. Servin is an author of experimental fiction, and was known for being the man who inserted images of men kissing in the computer game SimCopter. Vamos is an associate professor of media arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York. They are assisted by numerous people across the globe.

Improv Everywhere (often IE) is a comedic performance art group based in New York City, formed in 2001 by Charlie Todd. Its slogan is "We Cause Scenes."
The group carries out pranks, which they call "missions" in public places. The stated goal of these missions is to cause scenes of "chaos and joy." Some of the group's missions use hundreds of performers and are similar to flash mobs, while other missions utilize only a handful of performers. Improv Everywhere has stated that they do not identify their work with the term flash mob, in part because their site was created two years prior to the flash mob trend.

While long-time members of Improv Everywhere often participate in missions, many are open to the public. IE has organized and carried out over 85 missions, from synchronized swimming in a park fountain to repeating a five-minute sequence of events in a Starbucks coffee shop over and over again for an hour to flooding a Best Buy store with members dressed exactly like the staff. All the missions share a certain modus operandi: Members ("agents") play their roles entirely straight, not breaking character or betraying that they are acting. IE claims the missions are benevolent, aiming to give the observers a laugh and an experience.

"Everyone come to the floor for conditioning!" yelled my coach charlie, "Except for you Rachel, you need to keep working on your fronts on beam."

Those two sentences could have been one of the best things I heard all day. First off, I got to skip conditioning. Secondly, I was working on front flips on beam which was one of the few skills I enjoyed doing in gymnastics. My task for the day was to stick 5 fronts. I had stuck 3 already but i probably attempted at least 10. So my fronts were definitely not consistent yet. But i was ok with that, considering I just started learning them.

I was standing on the edge of the beam on my toes and with my arms tight in front of me. I took a deep breath in and visualized myself doing a perfect front. Then slowly exhaled and resighted the words, "arms, pop, tuck, stick". I took three powerful steps and pushed off the beam and threw my body forward and tucked. But something went wrong when i pushed off the beam. I tried to compensate for the bad take off. I pulled my body into a tight tuck to make sure I would complete the flip. But I over compensated and I ended up stumbling off the beam and over a few mats and onto the floor. By the time all the momentum I had stopped I was standing on the floor hysterically laughing about 15 feet away from the beam. After a few seconds the shock went away and I realized my toe was throbbing with pain. I thought i just stubbed it so I went I reached down to rub the pain out. But thats when I lost it. I saw a drop of blood! So by the way, I am extremely terrified of blood. So when I saw it, I threw my body to the ground. I lied on my stomach, so my toe would be out of view. And at the top of my lungs I yell, "BLOOD, I'M BLEEDING!!!" So personally I thought I was just being a cry baby, I was expecting it to be just a little cut on my toe that would need a cool strawberry short cake band-aid. But apparently my dramatic fall to the ground and scream was expectable. my coach comes over and yells to the other girls to get a med kit. well that was an indication to me that, I needed more than just a little band aid. So I am laying on my stomach the whole time while my coach is rapping my foot up, I have no idea what is happening. Little did I know my toe was squirting blood out like a water fountain. Apparently blood was all over the place. There was a trail from the beam over all the mats i stubbled upon and on the floor. Luckily all my teammates knew me very well and they knew not to mention anything about the blood. They all just sat around me and we talked like nothing was happening and like blood was not squirting out of my foot. once my coach finished she told me I should probably go to the hospital and she casually threw in that she was able to see my bone in my toe too. EW, I really did not need to know that. So anyways, I had my parents take me to the ER where they gave me 13 stitches going around my big toe. And two weeks later the day I got my stitches out I ripped it right back open =)

Since that day I have never skipped out on conditioning nor have I ever done front flips on beam... i've been scared

My scar is my left thumbnail. I grew up on a farm, and one late summer day (I think I was about to be a freshman in high school) my dad asked for help installing a new line of teeth to the windrower. It was my job to make sure that the new row of teeth he was sliding in stayed in the track.

I was usually using a screwdriver to do this, but at some point that wasn't working. I had to use my hands. I told my dad to hold on, but he didn't hear me, and by thumb got smashed. I ended up losing most of my thumbnail from that accident. Even though some of my nail hadn't been lost, my body apparently thought all of it was, so when my thumbnail started growing back, I actually had a full thumbnail growing over a partial thumbnail. This pattern has continued to this day.

I never told one single family member about my arrest, and none know about it still to this day. I managed to deal with the situation by myself, eventually getting my charge dismissed completely.

Both of these scars came from the result of teenage boredom. My friends and I were, like most male teenagers of our time, were into skateboarding. We always had to take it to new limits and began sitting down on our skateboards and racing, louge style, down this huge hill in one of our neighborhoods we named "The Nile". It was named this because of all the twists and turns it had in it and also for how big and steep this hill was. The day I got these scars we got the bright idea of "battle louging", fighting and kicking our way down "The Nile". I got ran into at the fastest part of the hill of course and it sent me in to a speed wobble, I tried to make it to the grass over the curb, but was not in time. I probably slid about 10 feet on the concrete and it was mostly on my arm. I had to pull asphault out of my wounds and skated home in fear of infection.

This is an outfit that I wore to a movie I went to with a boy. When I dressed, had no idea whether I was dressing for a first date or just a night with a friend. My roommates were not a fan of this guy, so they advised me to dress down. I went to my room to play dress up, and chose this silly shirt. I made it during one of my weekly craft circles from the summer. When I went down to show my roommates my ridiculous outfit, I noticed the boy's car pull into my driveway, and I had not time to change. So I went to the movie dressed like this. When we ran into the boy's attorney in the ticket line, she said "We should sit together, then I can tell you sister we went on a double date." I wore a puff paint bedazzled squirrel on a first date.

Ballet Mécanique (1924) was a project by the American composer George Antheil and the filmmaker/artist Fernand Léger. Although the film was intended to use Antheil's score as a soundtrack, the two parts were not brought together until the 1990s.

In concert performance, the "ballet" is not a show of human dancers but of mechanical instruments. Among these, player pianos, airplane propellers, and electric bells stand prominently onstage, moving as machines do, and providing the visual side of the ballet. As the bizarre instrumentation may suggest, this was no ordinary piece of music. It was loud and percussive –- a medley of noises, much as the Italian Futurists envisioned new music of the 20th century. To explore a fascinating artifact of modernist music like Ballet Mécanique, it is worth understanding its history and also its musical qualities.

I have never had the gift of using words. I speak but nothing comes out. I hear and listen to what is going on around me but I can never truly respond to it. I see a world full of movement and life but sometimes I’m still. I am naïve and ignorant to the common person. But through art I can show I am always listening, I am always moving and I am always interacting with the world around me.

Photography is the art form I am most interested in. When taking a picture, I don’t like to make the purpose of the picture obvious. However, I always have a reason behind a picture whether it is to express how I feel or to show the feelings or lifestyle of someone else. When people view my work, I like them to question it; I want them to spend time thinking about it. I try to make my work appealing but I also like it to have a deeper meaning. My work tends to be social in nature. This includes the way in which we perceive ourselves—both how we sculpt our individual identities through society, and how we perceive ourselves collectively, as well as the way people interact with each other and the way in which we interact with the social constructs our collective history has created. I’ve always wanted to get people to think more, to ask them questions with no answers so that they themselves have to ask even more questions. What has drawn my attention lately is the negative space between people and the way in which it’s depicted to represent the relationships between those people—whether they be as intimate as lovers or mere strangers inhabiting the same environment.

I’m taking this course because I am very interested in contemporary artists that work between mediums. More importantly though, as an aspiring artist in this century, I want to be able to push myself out of the limitations of being only a “painter”. Not that painting by itself is in any way deficient; I simply feel that the confines of what we think of as “a painting” limit the otherwise infinite possibilities of the forms in which the messages and emotions I want to convey could take. In my recent work I have been experimenting with mixed media paintings, using materials such as foil, patterned paper, spray paint, charcoal, sculpting mediums (for example acrylic molding paste), etc, along with traditional oil and acrylic paint. This class, to me, is a way to force myself (or allow myself the time to) go further, working beyond a surface and the materials applied to that surface. Intermedia also seems to lend itself well to the subjects I’m most passionate about. I’m especially interested the idea of the social experiment as art, like causing a scene among an unsuspecting audience with the goal of making people ask themselves questions about issues that otherwise go unnoticed or are easily shrugged off.

To tell you that my art is personal would be stupid: all art is personal. When it ceases to be personal, it ceases to be art. Even the artist who attempts to detach far as possible for his work ends up allowing the viewer to make some sort of conclusion about him. I guess what I’m trying to say is my art is personal in that it often forces me onto other people. My experiences, my sense of humor, my ideas on sexuality and gender and how they are expressed. When I draw from my personal experience, it is often the most shocking and taboo that I become fixated on, yet I’m not beyond embarrassment or shame. The truth is, I’m probably just as rattled as everyone else, even more so in most cases. What might be the simplest of confessions to one person are the most poignant to me.

I guess my goal is to make my art personal to other people, not just to talk endlessly about myself and gauge the world’s reactions. I want to engage with pop culture and the way it constantly crosses the line between a capital commodity and art. Things with cult status and recognition obsess me: because of my father, being a Dead Head is just as much a part of my heritage as being Jewish is. In this age, television, movies, music and the innumerable glories of the Internet are just as much a part of identity as class and religion. Hopefully, this year, I will have the opportunity to explore this idea.

I typically equate myself as a mouth, unhinged at the jaw like a snake, ready to swallow anything and everything without ever realizing what anything and everything truly are. I am a giant maw leading to the belly swelling under the contents of an infinite ocean. The only way to expunge, to purge, is to create. Every bit absorbed, every single particle that swirls down the hole turned again outward, reassembled. These are the pieces on my palette.

What I want more than anything is to better understand how and in what ways this can be utilized. I desire purpose. Purpose gives strength and momentum which facilitate creation. My cup runeth over-I need to learn how to pour some of it out before I burst.

My artistic journey began when I started playing the guitar in junior high. This opened my eyes to a lot of new things and really began creating the artist I am today. This led me towards graphic arts because I loved all the album cover art. Music has influenced my life more than anything else and has brought me where I am today. I involve music in a lot of my work, it has the largest influence out of anything. I was most mesmerized by Alex Grey, the artist for the band TOOL, because his work was so much different than anything I had seen before. In high school I went more towards the graphic design aspects and found new artists such as David Carson and Bert Monroy to inspire me along the way.

Bringing the aspirations into my own work is still a slow work in progress. I have big goals for what I want to do and this is just the brick work. In this class I want to broaden my horizons and introduce myself to new mediums. I'm most interested in the video aspect of this class. I haven't had much experience with this and I think it could be very interesting.

I have always considered myself primarily a 2-d artist. I make a lot of short comics and am constantly drawing 'characters,' either real of fictitious. My pieces tend to imply indirectly or quite explicitly a situation or story. Sometimes I revert to a traditional linear story telling, but more often then not I'll focus on single scenes, which only display the characters. My drawings tend to be more confident and natural than other techniques and mediums I have explored.

In contrast to my line drawings, I also create surrealistic photographic collages using advanced lithographic techniques. These two areas come across very differently. The presence of my hand is very strong in my drawings, where the collages tend to appear more composed.

This semester for intermedia I would like to create motion art to projected onto 2-d images. I would like these pieces to blend my drawings and digital art into something to express both sides of my interests. I want to create background or interactive characters that would enliven my 2-d work.

When people ask me questions about the concept behind my art or why I create it, I don't always have an answer. All I do know is that the art I create and the process of doing so makes me happy. I found my niche in photography after brief experimentation in several artistic fields. It has always given me pleasure to be able to capture a moment in time and share it with others. A picture is worth a thousand words and the world is my audience.

My photographs often follow the idea of beauty in simplicity. While I'm interested in several aspects of photography, I'm most inspired by light and its ability to transform a photograph. Besides photography, another passion of mine is music, which is one of the things I hope to experiment with in this class.

The backbone of my own artistic practice lies mainly in electronic music production and performance. With this interest in music I also developed a love for graphic arts because of their use in promotional materials like flyers and posters.

I have always been interested in Technology, humanitarianism, environmentalism, truth and freedom. Truth is a concept that I really value because I feel there is a lack of it to be found in our world. I'm passionate about being pro-peace, pro-freedom, pro-truth, and anti-war. I enjoy world politics, mythology, religion, history, and reading. I love to create and build things. I like to experiment with video, photography, graphic design, drawing, and music.

I find all the world religions interesting but could never devote to one of them. I prefer to learn about all of them and come to my own conclusions.

I am taking this class because I feel that it fits my interests and goals. I have always loved the fact that art can convey a message, through a medium, to be received and understood by thousands or millions of people. I feel that, because of this, art is an extremely powerful communicative tool that has the ability to raise awareness of issues and ideas to a broad range of people in the world. Art can be used to educate and uplift society... spiritually, mentally, ethically, and physically. I find that exciting.

My goals in the class are to develop a greater understanding of life and art.

My artwork has continually been evolving and has endured I think it's greatest changes within the past year/ two years. I am very interested in patterns, geometric shapes/figures, and color. Namely- how lines can be perceived as something from far away, and something completely different up close. An artist that I find is similar to this idea is Sol Lewitt- I became introduced to his work last year.

I think this stems from my attention to organization in other aspects of my life- orderliness- I usually have a place for everything- I put things back the way I found them, etc. In this way, my attention to detail within my work is evident when considering what I draw, and at times I probably seem a little OCD. I like working larger scale with smaller concepts/patterns. However, my art is not limited to this. I am constantly writing down quotations I find/lyrics/notes to myself and have been trying to incorporate them someway into my artwork more seamlessly. I gain ideas through what I doodle in class when I am not giving to much thought to what I am drawing. I like to collect old photographs- specifically from the store Artifacts here in town- and I am also starting to grow an interest in thread or sewing colored string,yarn, etc onto/into works. I really wouldn't say I have a set 'style' just yet, although I am getting there, but I do have set concepts and forms I am more drawn to than others; this usually includes more abstract than anything else.

What I'd like to gain from this class is a more comprehensive approach to various art forms as a whole and maybe gain an understanding or a broader view of other mediums and how they can relate to mine- as well as different artists/avenues I could look to for inspiration.

I would say my most limiting factor when it comes to my art is time and resources. Finding time to actually act on my ideas and then be in the studio is an issue. Also, resources- I ain't no moneybags, so certain things or tools are harder to obtain when you have to decide between eating actual food for a couple weeks or buying whatever it is I would need for a project. I've also always been interested in photography but never had the means to act on that interest so I'm pumped to learn about that area.

To start off, I've always been interested in art from Day 1. Ever since kindergarden doing the finger paintings to art classes I've taken in college, I've loved it from the get-go. What ultimately got me interested in graphic design was after I saw the movie Iron Man in theaters. That was the turning point in my life, where after I watched the movie, I can remember saying to myself that I wanted to do graphic design (since I liked art and was interested in computers, why not do graphic design?). Ever since I've been more observant, more up-to-date, more open to and more intrigued to make my own art. I have all sorts of inspirations, ranging from Dali's work, Escher's work and Alex Grey's work (the album artist for the band Tool). I love any kind of graffiti artwork, as well as pop art. I'm also getting more in touch with and more interested in photography. Basically, anything that catches my eye I'll be interested in. I've been told that I have a very graffiti like style, which I would like to explore more in this class, and see what I can conjure up.

I am almost always listening to music when I create anything whether it's a project or just sketches - it not only inspires me but it makes me feel more creative as I'm working. I love basically everything and anything I listen to, with the exception of some country. I like anything from rock, rap, all kinds of techno and anything inbetween. My favorite artists would include DJ AM, The Bloody Beetroots, MSTRKRFT, The Crookers, Kanye West, Tool, Dave Matthews Band, O.A.R and everything else that I can't think of right now. I feel that a lot of what I create is a direct connection to the music I listen to. The music I listen to and the style it has has a great effect on what I can do.

If I had to describe what I am interested in with only one word, that word would be “EPIC.” I am drawn to grand narratives, whether expressed through visual, audio, or verbal mediums. I prefer focusing on the macro- rather than the micro-story. In daily life, I enjoy following geopolitical issues. Because of this fascination with the interaction between power, politics, and geography, I like maps. If a picture is worth a thousand words, a good map is worth a million.

I also like anything that allows me to feel a full range of emotions. Anything that allows me to feel seemingly opposite emotions simultaneously is a hit with me. A song that has a jagged sense of foreboding and darkness yet somehow gives an impression of peacefulness or splendor that washes over the listener, for instance, accomplishes this. H. R. Giger’s work is another example. His creatures are undeniably dark and evince nothing short of evil, yet they are hypnotically beautiful. It is a fine line that an artist must walk to succeed in taking the viewer, reader, or listener on such a wondrous ride. If I could achieve such a balance with my work, I will have achieved my goal.

Camille's Interests

The seriousness of the news in comparison to the mind-numbing, yet engaging celebrity news in

magazines, as well as

celebrity news (suchas E! News... I'm obsessed!). I have noticed due to my interest in world news, I am more willing to read intellectual books such as (Fateful Choices by Ian Kershaw and the works of Jane Austen). I used to HATE reading and would only resort to getting any kind of outside information from more fun/amusing shows, such as E News and the Colbert Report and read only magazines. However, it was magazines and the vivid use of color on shows like those on the E network that made me decide to go into Graphic Design.

I also have a passion for the art during the impressionist movement. Art

ists such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edouard Manet, and of course Claude Monet. I am forever jealous of those who possess the talent to paint, especially if their work has an impressionist feel.

Even at an early age, I was drawn to Audrey Hepburn when watching her in movies such as "Roman Holiday", "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and "Sabrina". Her poise, simple yet elegant fashion sense, and natural beauty were always things that I wanted to emulate.

Layout, web, print, etc. (I love all forms of Graphic design, and continuing to learn more, even on my own by reading books about typography, layout, and how to create websites) is very interesting to me.

• Music

I enjoy a very wide array of music, including: The Beatles, Michael Buble, The Bloody Beatroots, Tyler Hilton, CCR, T-Pain, etc..

As for what holds me back in my work...

I would have to say lack of time, and the worry of what others might say. I take a lot to heart so when others don't approve or don't enjoy work I have done, it tends to affect me in a negative way. This semester I will do my best to push this aside in order to express myself in a manner that expresses how I really feel about a particular subject.

american painter, largely part of expressionist movement. significant predecessor to performance art because of the initiation of the idea of art as a process. The concept of art as a verb, an act of ones doing is central to the artists we'll be discussing and pollack is a reduced example of what was to come. : "...look passively and try to receive what the painting has to offer and not bring a subject matter or preconceived idea of what they are to be looking for."

French artist and is considered an important figure in post-war European art. New York critics of Klein's time classify him as neo-Dada, but other critics, such as Thomas McEvilley in an essay submitted to Artforum in 1982, have since classified Klein as an early, though "enigmatic," Post-Modernist. Klein experimented with various methods of applying the paint; firstly different rollers and then later sponges, created a series of varied surfaces. This experimentalism would lead to a number of works Klein made using naked female models covered in blue paint and dragged across or laid upon canvases to make the image, using the models as "living brushes". This type of work he called Anthropometry. Other paintings in this method of production include "recordings" of rain that Klein made by driving around in the rain at 70 miles per hour with a canvas tied to the roof of his car, and canvases with patterns of soot created by scorching the canvas with gas burners.

Oliver de Sagazan

French contemp artist; in another performance he sculpts a head in front of an audience, muttering to himself and/or the sculpture. His muttering turns to sporadic/angry yelling and the performance quickly ends with Sagazan loosely wrapping the sculpture in cloth, lighting it on fire, and exiting the room.
